At the begining of the summer I had the oppurtunity to go and listen to Larry Gelwix. For those of you who don't have any idea who that man is, he is the Coach of the Highland Rugby team. His speach was absoulutly amazing. He gave us 5 tips to becoming a champion. Champion in life, on a team, as a family ect. Everytime I think about them, I think of how right on this man really was.
1-Go Horizontal
This one was about being a leader or an example. Vertical leaders are those who are pushing for the best at the very begining. They come off rude and non understanding. Horizontal leaders are those who expect you to get things one step at a time and perfect it, learning while getting there. That describes life. You have to take small horizontal steps to begin your climb. 4 years of High School, graduate. 2 years of college, graduate. Reading the scriptures, happiness. Being modest in clothes, launguage ect. , dating the right way, not being someone you aren't, not listening to outside voices, going to church, temple marriage. "By small and simple things are great things brought to pass" Start with the small horizontal steps moving forward and then you will slowly start to go more vertical! If we could only see what the future was for us...
2-Don't Play with Snakes
Larry told a story about Brain. One day Brain was in his shed cleaning and found a rattlesnake. Now Brain was only about 14. He picked it up and had a good handle on it. With snake in hand, he ran around and found kids in the neighborhood to show. Brain started chasing kids around with it and they would run away screaming. Now just like any other boy, this was pure joy! The snake however, didn't find this fun and was ready to bite at any minute!!! His friend Max found him and Brain started telling Max about the adventures he had had with the snake and how he found the snake. While the two boys were talking, Brain began to become side tracked and Brain's grip on the snake slowly loosened. As soon as the waiting snake felt the grip loose enough, he took a massive strike at Briain, leaving Brain passed out on the ground.
We've all heard the story or seen the movie of the Indian and the snake, we as the Indian and the snake as a sin of the world. "You knew what it was when you picked it up..." We all know what we are getting into before we do it. There is a right and a wrong to everything. We know what to pick and how to go about it.
3-Hit the Field Running
Larry said something that I realy liked when he talked about this one. It isn't about changing your attitude, it is about changing your behavior. If you change your behavior, then your attitude will change. It's like when someone on the team misses the foul shot that was a one and one at practice and the punishment is to run a ladder on a miss. If you run crappy because you are mad, then your attitude is crappy. However, even though you are upset that they missed, you still run hard because it is practice, then you are better in shape for the next time or game. Giving your best. That requires a lot. I once heard it said that you can tell the measure of a person by the way they treat people they don't need anything from. Like kind to the person we accidently run into at the mall, smile at the person who is staring at you from across the room ect. I think about that all the time at work.
4-Expect to W.I.N.
What's Important Now. Trying to figure out where to go in the fall. Reading the scriptures. Working over 45 hours a week to earn some major money. Going to church. Serving the Lord for two years. Finding that one special person. Praying. Taking care of your kids. Remembering why we are on earth. Teaching people the gospel. Finding a cure for cancer. Preparing for a recital. Driving to see a long lost friend. Visiting the elderly. Loosing yourself in service. Getting ready to go on a date. Preparing for your future. Paying off the bills. It is different for everyone!!
5-Focus on the Final Score
Even if it is a loss, you can look at the final score and see how much you put into it. If you are satisfied with your performance, good for you. Now there are some of us (aka me) when I loose it is like the end of the world and I can't be satisfied. BUT when I picture the big picutre and see what that loss did for me, I am satisfied. Passion and support also play into this. If you are passionate about something, it is easier to put for your best effort, and be more into it. If you have support, it is easier to try and accomplish what you want to knowing that you have people behind you.
These five steps can change your outlook on the situations that you are going through in your life. Remember, (1) small steps get you to the place you want to be. (2) You know what you did or what you are getting into. (3) Give everything you have, treat people with the most respect! (4) Remeber where you are in you life and what is imporant at this very moment. (5) When you are accomplished with something, see what lessons you learned from it.
Until then...
